The Crumbleys Are Crumbling

Dramatic Day Reveals Details About the Parents of a School Shooting Suspect

In a tense arraignment Saturday morning, James and Jennifer Crumbley listened by videoconference from separate jail cells as they were charged with involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shootings of four Oxford High School students, who, police say, were gunned down by the couple’s 15-year-old son, Ethan.

As the judge read each of the charges, one for each of the four students, she asked Jennifer Crumbley if she understood.

“I understand,” Crumbley said tearfully.

The arraignment, at which the couple entered pleas of not guilty, capped an extraordinary day and a half during which the Crumbleys, considered fugitives by authorities, were captured in Detroit after an intense manhunt and then placed in the same jail facility in Oakland County, Michigan, that held their son, with each of the three in isolation.

The arrest and the arraignment, along with other information that emerged Saturday, only began to answer some of the questions about who the Crumbleys are, how they got to this moment and what could have prevented the tragedy at Oxford High.

Suspect’s Parents Are Arrested After Manhunt

Suspicions of the Crumbleys’ culpability in the shootings intensified Saturday as details about their apparent attempts to evade law enforcement were revealed. The manhunt ended with their arrests around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, after authorities received a tip on the couple’s location. The Crumbleys were found inside an art studio in a warehouse in Detroit, according to Sheriff Michael Bouchard of Oakland County. They were not armed, he said.

Lawyers for the couple maintained at the arraignment Saturday morning that the Crumbleys were not fleeing police and said that a miscommunication with the prosecutor’s office was the reason the couple did not turn themselves in earlier. But that characterization was disputed by Bouchard during a news conference Saturday afternoon.

“I’m not going to get into the specifics, but I think where they were and how they were seems to support the position they were hiding and they weren’t looking for surrendering at that point,” he said.

Bouchard added that authorities believed that someone helped the couple gain access to the building and suggested that another person could be charged with aiding and abetting or with obstruction. He also said that it was not clear whether Ethan Crumbley was aware that his parents had been charged. (On Sunday, Andrzej Sikora, a 65-year-old resident of Oakland County, was said by his lawyer to be the person of interest. In a statement, the lawyer said Sikora has not been charged with a crime and is cooperating with authorities.)

During the arraignment, Karen D. McDonald, the Oakland County prosecutor, said that there was overwhelming evidence that would show that the Crumbleys should have known that their son was a danger to his school.

But Shannon Smith, one of the couple’s lawyers, told the judge that a fuller picture would come to light. “There is far more going on than what this court has been made aware of,” she said.

Who Are James and Jennifer Crumbley?

During the proceeding, the defense team revealed a few details of the couple’s lives.

Jennifer Crumbley, 43, grew up in Clarkston, a Detroit suburb about 20 minutes from Oxford, her lawyer said. Her lawyer added that Crumbley was recently working as a marketing director. An undated profile, recently removed, on the website of a Michigan real estate company had listed her as an employee.

Crumbley was charged with driving under the influence years ago, according to her lawyer, and court records show a few other misdemeanor charges.

James Crumbley, 45, also had a conviction for a DUI, but no more serious charges, his lawyer said.

In his Facebook profile, which has since been deleted, Crumbley listed a job history at a handful of small software and technology companies. Most recently, from February to July, he worked as an independent contractor for a San Francisco-based technology company called Monarch, according to the firm.

“He was terminated for reasons unrelated to this incident,” said Chase Gonzales, the company’s chief executive, who declined to offer additional details.

The couple once lived in Florida but returned to Michigan several years ago, their lawyers said. They bought their home near downtown Oxford in 2015.

A former girlfriend of James Crumbley’s, Michelle Cobb, 39, struggled Saturday to reconcile the current news with the man she said she once fell in love with. Cobb, who has a son, Elijah, 18, with Crumbley, spoke about their relationship in an interview outside her home in Jacksonville, Florida.

While being inundated with calls, texts and Facebook messages from reporters, she said she has tried to help Elijah, who lives with her, come to terms with what has happened with that part of his family. Elijah declined to be interviewed.

Cobb met Crumbley when she was 18, she said. She worked as a waitress, and he lived in the apartment below hers. He worked in several different jobs in sales and marketing, she said.

“I loved him to death,” she said. “He was fun, loving, caring. We had a wonderful relationship.” It was Cobb’s first serious relationship, she said, and it lasted until she was 25.

Three months after they broke up, James and Jennifer Crumbley married, according to Cobb. After that, she said, her relationship with James Crumbley deteriorated and ultimately grew bitter.

What Happened Before the Shooting

New details also emerged Saturday from the school district, Oxford Community Schools, about its version of the meeting involving the Crumbleys and school officials before the shootings. In a letter to parents and staff members, Tim Throne, the district superintendent, said that there had been two incidents that involved the shooting suspect, the Crumbleys’ son.

“The student’s parents never advised the school district that he had direct access to a firearm or that they had recently purchased a firearm for him,” Throne wrote.

On Nov. 29, Throne wrote, a teacher saw Ethan Crumbley viewing images of bullets on his cellphone during class. A counselor and a staff member met with him, and he indicated that shooting sports were a family hobby, the letter said. The school tried to contact Jennifer Crumbley but did not hear back right away. The next day, the parents confirmed their son’s account, the letter said.

On Nov. 30, the morning of the shootings, a teacher observed drawings by Ethan Crumbley that raised concern. The county prosecutor, McDonald, has said that the drawing featured images of a gun, a person who had been shot, a laughing emoji and the words, “Blood everywhere,” and, “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me.”

The teacher, Throne said, notified school counselors and the dean of students. The student was immediately removed from the classroom and taken to the guidance counselor’s office, where he claimed the drawing was part of a video game he was designing, Throne said.

After the student’s parents arrived, school officials asked “specific probing questions” regarding the student’s potential to harm others or himself, Throne said. His answers, which were confirmed by his parents, led counselors to conclude that he did not intend to hurt anyone, the superintendent said.

“At no time did counselors believe the student might harm others based on his behavior, responses and demeanor, which appeared calm,” wrote Throne, referring to both meetings.

Counseling was recommended for him, and the parents were told they had 48 hours to seek counseling for their child or the school would contact Children’s Protective Services, Throne wrote.

“When the parents were asked to take their son home for the day,” he wrote, “they flatly refused and left without their son, apparently to return to work.”

Because their son had no previous disciplinary infractions, “the decision was made he would be returned to the classroom rather than sent home to an empty house.”

Both incidents, the letter said, stayed at the guidance counselor level and were never elevated to the principal’s or assistant principal’s offices.

The counselors made a judgment based on their training and clinical experience, Throne said, “and did not have all the facts we now know.”

In the letter, he also said that the district would enlist an outside party to conduct an investigation of the incident. The investigation would include examining “any and all interaction the student had with staff and students,” the letter said.

Throne added that the district also plans to ask an independent security consultant to review the district’s safety practices and procedures.

How To Have A Good Country

1. Confiscate all the ill gotten gains of the filthy rich and if the filthy rich resist take it by force.

Most of the wealth in the US is owned by the filthy rich and contrary to what they want you to think, the filthy rich didn't get rich through ethical business doings and hard work. Neither can you. Wealth is power.

2. Cleanse the gene pool of all undesirable DNA. Nature has more to do with human behavior than nurture.

Consider most Trumpers aka MAGAts aka Trumpanzees. They didn't vote for Trump because they believed his lies. He didn't trick them. They believed in Trump's treason, bigotry and depravity. He was merely saying everything they were thinking.

3. Punish all traitors. Spay and Neuter them.

We can't have these scumbags reproducing. Chances are their offspring will be as evil as they are. A traitor would fuck and pimp his own daughter. Just like Trump does.

4. Punish all liars.  Spay and Neuter them.

We have tolerated lying liars for far too long. We have legalized lying under the guise of free speech long enough. Lying is not protected speech. When that criminal cocksucker Mark Zuckerberg said he was not going to be the arbitrator of speech he was being a weasel. Saying something that is untrue isn't always a lie, but when some scumbag knows some if untrue but wants people to believe and says it anyway, that person is a lying liar and deserve an entire can of drain cleaner poured down his throat.

5. Nationalize medicine and develop cures instead of  managing disease for profit.

As you know, health care in the United State is horribly bad and obscenely expensive. There hasn't been a cure since the cure for polio because disease management is what rakes in the money.

6. Ban the Abrahamic religions.

Don't deny it. The god of the Bible and the Koran is a dirty no good bastard. If you don't believe me simply read the Bible or the Koran. Some people have said that God is the most evil character in all of fiction. Whether God is real or a myth is not the point. Real or fictional God is evil and most Americans, assholes that they are, will say that God is live. God sucks!

7. Embrace science and technology.

While religion is the quest for ignorance, science is the quest for knowledge. God wanted to keep Adam and Eve ignorant and when they ate from the tree of knowledge it pissed God off and as a result he punished all humanity for what Adam and Eve did even though their act was not a crime.

God created disease and up until recently man would try to eradicate disease. Excuse me while I take a shit. This one I'll name God before a flush in so that it can be with all the other turds.

Those Trumpanzees enabled their evil and mentally defective son to kill and maim a bunch of innocent school kids. The school had a meeting with the the punk's parents the day before he, Ethan Crumbley went into his school with a gun and started his killing spree.

Chances are justice will not be done even if Ethan's scumbag parents are convicted. The judge will probably be soft on James and Jennifer Crumbley the depraved parents of Ethan Crumbley. The only possible defense for Ethan would be if he was on psychiatric medication. Most school shooters are on some type of dangerous mind altering psychotropic drug prescribed to them by a member of the Medical Mafia.

The parents were charged with involuntary manslaughter just hours before, per The Associated Press. Local law enforcement confirmed the parents met with school officials about their son's behavior and mental health just hours before the fatal shooting, according to the Associated Press. Three teenage victims – ranging in age from 14 to 17 – were identified late Tuesday by local authorities, while a fourth teenager died on Wednesday from his wounds, according to national and local news outlets. Three of the seven injured remain in hospitals.

How America Can Have Ethical and Affordable Medical Care

Copy and paste the following and send it to your elected officials. Address them as public servant, not governor, congressman or senator.

The US pays 3 times the world average for health but in spite of that the US is ranked lowest for quality.

The ads we see on TV for Medicare Advantage are scams by corporate mobsters.

The pharmaceutical ads we see on TV are not really informational, They are bribes so that the corporate media won't expose the criminality of the Medical Mafia. Google Pfizer Crimes and Johnson & Johnson crimes and after you learn about the carnage caused by these two Medical Mafia members ask yourself why they are the ones providing their shitty short lasting vaccines. Ask yourself, "Why should I trust these gangsters"?

Like Romney Care, Obama Care was simply another giveaway to the Medical Mafia. BTW, the Medical Mafia is the leading cause of preventable death and injury in the US. A few days ago my sister in law lost her sister to gross negligence at a hospital in Syracuse. Under the law it would be criminally negligent homicide had one of the peasants caused it but when someone working for a corporation kills on of the peasants there is never a criminal investigation let alone an arrest and trial. What might happen is a fine/bribe to a judge or prosecutor or a long drawn out civil lawsuit where the damages are paid by the criminals who caused the death. The other travesty/fuckery is that the family of the victim will still have to pay the bill.

Then we have billing fraud which when caught is settled by returning some of the money and paying a fine/bribe so that CEOs and the corrupt boards of directors go unpunished.

Then we have billing fraud which when caught is settled by returning some of the money and paying a fine/bribe so that CEOs and the corrupt boards of directors go unpunished.

Big pharma bribes to medical schools, labs, doctors and hospitals is the rule and not the exception. The cruel exploitation of human suffering for obscene profit is something that would make even a Nazi cringe. The reason Medical Mafia applies is because what they do to patients is extortion and intimidation. Are you OK with this public servant?

The solution is simple public servant. It's called equal justice under that law. This means in part to punish all wrongdoers regardless of how filthy rich they are. Unless this first step is taken and the criminal elite ruling class are subject to the same rules of law to which the peasants are held nothing will change. After every member of the Medical Mafia is brought to justice and put into cages along side dangerous street thugs and other sociopaths phase two can start.

1. Cures: The last disease eradicated was polio. Today the possible cure for Hep C is a combination of 2 older drugs but the price is obscene and perhaps 10,000 the cost of manufacturing the drugs. When AIDS first came out so mysteriously I had a hunch that the Medical Mafia was not going to create a cure. The same thing is probably for COVID-19.

The reason we no longer have cures is because there is less money in curing the biting maladies that plague humans. The Hippocratic Oath reads, "First do no harm." Fuck that because health care acquired infection and medical maiming is very profitable. What the Hippocratic Oath should read is, "First make obscene profit."

2. After all the Medical Mafia members are brought to justice, we the people run health care. We start by taking back all the ill-gotten obscene wealth of the American Medical Mafia members and the corporate news media.

3. We take over their hospitals and clinics and we treat people for free and cure them quickly.

4. We give the FDA a giant enema and flush out all the Medical Mafia thugs there.

If the US is to inept and still too corrupt the create a moral health care system we hire the French, Italians and the Japanese to create our health care system. They have good health care and they doing for less than half the cost of the US.

An ethical state can use something like the VA model. As bad as the VA is said to be, patient care there is far superior to for profit hospitals. Government administrators and workers can be held to strict standards and paid a living wage. Most private health care workers can't afford health care.

Free medical school like they have in France produces high quality ethical doctors. To get into medical school in France it doesn't take money, it takes merit. Ethical doctors are also victims of the medical Mafia's insatiable greed. Truth be told, American MDs have short lifespans. Apparently their shit doesn't work. If MDs were given a stipend to relocate to a state with ethical health care, the good ones would come. They would receive real training and education for their CEUs instead of attending parties sponsored by the Medical Mafia under the pretense of education.

MDs whine, complain and brag about the torturous shifts they are subjected to as interns and  residents but they rarely stop and think that they too are victims of corporate greed. We only allow truckers to drive for 10 hours straight, why don't we regulate doctors? The simple answer is GREED!

I hope to hear back from you public servants so that you can tell me if the government you head is willing to protect the people from the corporate Medical Mafia. I'm considering getting on the ballot because my message will resonate with every voter regardless of their political stripe. Everyone I know hates the Medical Mafia more than they hate the opposing political bullshit of their political enemies.

Questions and Facts That Give Pro Life Hypocrites Constipation

According to the March of Dimes, 50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage -- most often before a woman misses a menstrual period or even knows she is pregnant. About 15-25% of recognized pregnancies will end in a miscarriage. More than 80% of miscarriages occur within the first three months of pregnancy.

Miscarriage Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment

www.webmd.com/baby/guide/pregnancy-miscarriage

Why aren't funerals and burials held for miscarried fetuses?

Why would a loving and just god kill 50% of the "babies" in the womb simply waiting to be born?

God of the Bible AKA Jehovah, aka Elohim AKA Jealous has a long history of killing fetuses, children and mothers who rubbed him the wrong way, God's a dick faced pig.

Do aborted fetuses go to Heaven and get to worship God and massage his insatiable ego for all eternity or does God torture them in hell for all eternity?

If they go to heaven then they don't have to deal with life on earth and possibly doing something to piss off a tyrannical god. If God sends them to Hell, then it goes to show how much God sucks.

Ask the so called Pro Lifers these questions and tell them the facts before you pepper spray them.

FACT: Most pregnancies end in miscarriage and in spite of that funerals are never held for miscarried fetuses.

What the Bible says about Abortion

Abortion is not murder. A fetus is not considered a human life.
If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life. -- Exodus 21:22-23
The Bible places no value on fetuses or infants less than one month old.
And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver. -- Leviticus 27:6
Fetuses and infants less than one month old are not considered persons.
Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them. And Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD. -- Numbers 3:15-16
And the LORD said unto Moses, Number all the firstborn of the males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. -- Numbers 3:40
God sometimes approves of killing fetuses.
And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? ... Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. -- Numbers 31:15-17
(Some of the non-virgin women must have been pregnant. They would have been killed along with their unborn fetuses.)
Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. -- Hosea 9:14
Yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb. -- Hosea 9:16
Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up. -- Hosea 13:16
God sometimes kills newborn babies to punish their parents.
Because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die. -- 2 Samuel 12:14
God sometimes causes abortions by cursing unfaithful wives.
The priest shall say unto the woman, The LORD make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the LORD doth make thy thigh to rot, and thy belly to swell. And this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, to make thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to rot: And the woman shall say, Amen, amen. ...
And when he hath made her to drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed. -- Numbers 5:21-21, 27-28
God's law sometimes requires the execution (by burning to death) of pregnant women.
Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. -- Genesis 38:24
The Psalmist prays that his enemies are aborted.
Let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun. -- Psalm 58:8

The US Is NOT A Democracy. Stop Saying That It is!

The United States Is Not a Democracy. Stop Telling Students That It Is.

By Ursula Wolfe-Rocca

When U.S. voters cast their votes in the 2020 November election, an unchecked pandemic raged through the nation, uprisings against racism and police violence stretched into their eighth month, and new climate change-intensified storms formed in the Atlantic. The reactionary and undemocratic system by which we select our president was an insult to the urgency of the moment. Although the most recent tallies show more than 5 million more people voted for Joe Biden than for Donald Trump, thanks to the Electoral College, it took several days to learn who won. To the relief of many, it appears that this time — unlike 2000 or 2016 — the candidate who got the most votes nationwide also won the election.

When our students only learn about this exceptionally strange system from their corporate-produced history and government textbooks, they have no clue why this is how we choose our president. More importantly, they develop a stunted sense of their own power — and little reason to believe they might have the potential to create something better.

To review: A voter in Montana gets 31 times the electoral bang for their presidential vote than a voter in New York. A voter in Wyoming has 70 times the representation in the Senate as a voter in California, while citizens in Puerto Rico or Washington D.C. have none. The Republican Senate majority that recently confirmed Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, was elected by 14 million fewer votes than the 47 senators who voted against her confirmation.

Yet politicians and pundits regularly pronounce the United States a “democracy,” as if that designation is self-evident and incontrovertible. Textbooks and mainstream civics curricula make the same mistake, treating democracy as a fact rather than an enduring struggle — in which our students can play a critical role.

The standard iteration of “civics” in schools stipulates the brilliance of the framers, the democratic nature of the U.S. system, the infallibility of the Constitution (it was built to be amended!), so that our institutions seem outside of history and beyond politics. As the Koch Brothers-funded Bill of Rights (BRI) Institute states,

The founding documents are the true primary sources of America. Writings such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and others written from 1764 to 1791, showcase the philosophical, traditional, and political foundations on which our nation was built and that continue to shape our free society.

“Our free society.” One danger of a curriculum that declares the United States “free” is that it casts all U.S. institutions, by definition, as also free. The district-adopted textbook I was assigned last year in my Portland, Oregon, suburb, America Through the Lens (National Geographic, 2019), says about the 2016 presidential election, “…Trump won a narrow majority of voters in a number of swing states, or states where the election might go to either party. Even though almost 3 million more Americans cast their votes for Clinton, Trump won the electoral vote 306 to 232.” Since freedom is assumed, this textbook sees no need to offer any elaboration of a system in which “swing states” are decisive, and in which the person selected by the majority of voters does not win the presidency.

Perhaps the editors of America Through the Lens assume students have read a previous section of the text on the Electoral College? No. Paging back to the chapter on the Constitution, one finds only this anemic paragraph:

But how should the president be chosen? Some delegates thought the president should be directly elected by the voters. Others wanted Congress or the state legislatures to make the choice. The delegates finally arrived at a solution: an electoral college made up of electors from each state would cast official votes for the president and vice president. The number of electors from each state would be the same as the state’s number of representatives in Congress, and each state could decide how to choose its electors.

Students deserve an explanation for the origins of the Electoral College. Instead, the textbook offers mere description, dry as dust. We learn that the Electoral College emerged from a disagreement among delegates, but nothing about the actual substance of that disagreement or the interests at stake. Shouldn’t the authors explain to students why our founders rejected direct election of the president by the people, the most democratic option? With no sense of the problem, textbook writers assure students that the Electoral College was a “solution” and send them on their merry way.

But for whom was the Electoral College a solution? Many of the 55 White men at the Constitutional Convention worried about giving too much power to the people. Alexander Hamilton said the masses were prone to passion and might use their vote unwisely. Of course, both passion and wisdom are highly subjective terms. James Madison listed the “wicked schemes” inflaming the people to act so unwisely: “A rage for paper money, for an abolition of debts, for an equal division of property. . .” Madison called voters advancing their own economic interests wicked, but referred to his brethren — insulating their own wealth and power in Philadelphia — as “enlightened statesmen.” The Electoral College was a “solution” to the bankers and plantation owners in 1787 but looked like exclusion if you were a poor indebted veteran in western Massachusetts, an enslaved person in Virginia, or a Hitchiti person fleeing land-thieving White settlers in Georgia.

It’s Constitution Day! Time to Teach Obedience or History? (Article) - Shays’ Rebellion | Zinn Education Project: Teaching People's History

Soldiers fire on protesters during Shays’ Rebellion. Led by Daniel Shays, a group of poor farmers and Revolutionary War veterans attempted to shut down Massachusetts courts in protest against debt collections against veterans and the heavy tax burden borne by the colony’s farmers.

Madison expressed another set of concerns about the direct election of the president. He pointed out that a popular vote would deprive the White South of “influence in the election on the score of the Negroes.” He was, of course, referring to the 40 percent of the southern U.S. population made up of enslaved people. Since the men at the Constitutional Convention had already adopted the Three-Fifths Compromise, establishing that enslaved people would bolster enslavers’ representation in Congress, the Electoral College was a “solution” because it meant the humans they violently exploited would inflate their influence in presidential elections too.

When my textbook matter-of-factly declares that the Electoral College was a “solution,” but makes no mention of the elite and white supremacist interests for whom that was true, nor the exploited and disenfranchised peoples for whom it was a disaster, it does not educate students, but lies to them. The very same textbooks that paint the Three-Fifths Compromise as a shameful relic of slavery, treat the Electoral College as an unremarkable feature of our system, as if they were not borne of the same white supremacist original sin.

This feigned neutrality covers up the classist and racist origins of our institutions. It is not only bad history but signals to students in 2020, “Nothing to see here.” The mock elections and legislative simulations common in U.S. civics classrooms encourage students to investigate the swirl of issues inside the container of U.S. “democracy,” but rarely the container itself. Students are commanded to vote, but not to judge the fundamental questions of governance not on the ballot — like the legitimacy of an electoral college devised by enslavers. What if our civics invited students not just to become occupants of an already-built U.S. government, but engineers and architects able to redesign, reframe, and rebuild the whole structure? What if our civics repurposed the word “framer” to mean all of us today — including our students?

One way to cultivate this activist sensibility in our students is to offer them a curriculum rich with an alternative pantheon of “framers” and “founding parents” in the ongoing struggle for democracy. Central to this project is the rejection of the singular, miraculous, and exceptional founding peddled by the Bill of Rights Institute and others. As Eric Foner’s newest book, The Second Founding — about the Reconstruction Amendments that finally made multiracial democracy possible — suggests, building freedom is a work in progress.

Black men line up to vote during the Reconstruction Era.

Similarly, many scholars and activists, notably the Rev. William Barber II, have embraced the idea of a multiplicity of Reconstructions: the first Reconstruction, following the Civil War in which freedpeople and their allies reimagined citizenship, social relationships, and politics; the second Reconstruction in the 20th century, when Black activists and their allies dismantled 100 years of Jim Crow, championed and popularized “one person, one vote,” and transformed U.S. law and society; and the third Reconstruction, happening now, exemplified by Black Lives Matter, the Dream Defenders, United We Dream, and others to address the ongoing manifestations of systemic racism in everything from housing to immigration, policing to education. In this telling, the United States has been constructed by many framers, not just those White elites in Philadelphia, but also the millions of unsung heroes who have never stopped seeking to transform the United States and the meaning of freedom.

Source: Geoff Livingston via Flickr

Angela Davis writes that “freedom is a constant struggle.” When, for example, we teach students about the fight for the 15th Amendment, alongside the movement 100 years later for the Voting Rights Act, alongside the efforts now to combat voter suppression, we not only provide evidence of Davis’s words, but invite students into that struggle. By rejecting both the textbook’s boring and evasive approach to our anti-democratic institutions, and BRI’s glorification of a U.S. founding that meant — and continues to mean — oppression for so many, we affirm our students’ reality and provide models of activism through which they might reimagine and revise it.

On November 2, 2020, one day before the general election that would deny him a second term, Donald J. Trump issued an executive order establishing the 1776 Commission. The commission’s mandate? A “restoration of American education” to emphasize the “clear historical record of an exceptional Nation dedicated to the ideas and ideals of its founding.” President Trump has been defeated, but this commitment to institutionalize the teaching of American exceptionalism has not. We educators must fight for a curriculum that teaches our students facts not fables. The United States has never been a democracy, defined by freedom and equality for all. But nor has there ever been a time when people did not struggle toward a democratic future, dreaming of freedom, risking life and limb to make those dreams manifest, and creating a more just society along the way. Let’s teach civics and history that affirms for our students there is nothing sacrosanct in the political and economic status quo, that freedom fighters, past and present, are founders too, and we all have a right to be framers — to redesign this structurally unsound house to better shelter our lives, safety, comfort, and full humanity.

A shorter version of this article, TEACHER VOICE: The United States is not a democracy. Stop telling students that it is, was produced by The Hechinger Report, a nonprofit, independent news organization focused on inequality and innovation in education.

The Bible Is Pro Abortion
