An Arizona man has died and his wife is in critical condition after the two ingested an additive they believed was the drug touted by President Trump as a potential cure for the COVID-19 virus. According to NBC News, the woman says she and her husband, who are both in their 60s, watched a press conference with President Trump where he spoke about chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine and the potential impact it has on the virus.
The woman said she had some chloroquine phosphate in her house that she used to treat her fish for a sickness. The couple decided to mix a small amount of the chloroquine phosphate into a liquid and drink it. However, within minutes they both started feeling ill and called 911.
When paramedics arrived, the woman was unable to stand and speak, while her husband was having respiratory issues. The woman was able to vomit some of what they’d consumed, but the man did not. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but eventually died.
The woman said they ingested the additive because they were afraid of catching COVID-19 and saw President Trump talk about the potential effectiveness against the virus, the news site reported. However, what they ingested, chloroquine phosphate, is formulated differently than the hydroxychloroquine that Trump spoke about.
During a March 19 press conference, Trump mentioned the possibility of hydroxychloroquine -- also used as an anti-malaria medicine -- being available for prescription from a doctor as possible tool to battle COVID-19. The president falsely stated the Food and Drug Administration had approved the drug to treat COVID-19 patients and the FDA has said more testing needs to be done to understand the effectiveness of the drug.
“The nice part is, it’s been around for a long time so we know if things don’t go as planned, it’s not going to kill anybody,” Trump said about hydroxychloroquine.
At a later press conference, after the FDA confirmed it had not approved the drug for COVID-19 treatment, Trump continued to tout the drug and said he felt very good about its effectiveness.
“As the expression goes ‘what do we have to lose?’” Trump said.
